About the use of Artificial Intelligence

Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools in Manuscripts Submitted to BEJOM

The Brazilian Electronic Journal of Mathematics (BEJOM) acknowledges the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools, such as language assistants and automated translators, during the writing and revision of scientific manuscripts. However, the adoption of these tools must adhere to ethical principles, authorship norms, and scientific integrity.

The following guidelines must be observed:

  1. Responsible and Transparent Use
The use of AI tools must be limited to auxiliary tasks, such as grammar correction, style suggestions, or translation assistance. Authors remain fully responsible for the scientific content, reasoning, data accuracy, and originality of the manuscript.

  2. AI Tools Must Not Be Credited as Authors
AI tools must not be listed as co-authors, as they do not meet the authorship criteria established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), such as intellectual contribution, accountability for results, and involvement in the manuscript's revision process.

  3. Declaration of AI Use
If any generative AI tool has been used during the preparation of the manuscript (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, DeepL), authors must clearly disclose this in the acknowledgments section or in a footnote. The following statement may be used:
“The author(s) used [name of the tool] for [briefly describe the purpose, e.g., grammar correction, text structure suggestions, translation]. The final content is the sole responsibility of the authors.”

  4. Integrity and Plagiarism
The use of AI does not exempt authors from responsibility for possible cases of plagiarism, data manipulation, or fabrication of information. All manuscripts remain subject to originality checks using anti-plagiarism tools.

  5. Updates and Revisions
These guidelines will be updated periodically, in accordance with technological developments and recommendations from leading national and international scientific institutions.
