Abstract

The Santos Bay is a complex region with relevant economic activities. Risks concerning oil spills are considerable, due
to the intense movement of boats related to the “Porto de Santos”, as well as activities as fishery, transport and nautical leisure and sports. This environment is under frequent interchanging with the adjacent estuarine system and continental
shelf. Fieldworks enabled the classification of the delimited segments according to their Coastal Sensitivity Index; the
elaboration of ESI Maps; and a detailed spatial database in a Geographical Information System environment. The
eastern and western sectors of Santos Bay coastline are largely dominated by rocky shores, often quite fragmented and
heterogeneous, with greater sensitivity. The north sector is dominated by large dissipative beaches. The obtained
results are useful for contingency planning and represent an important contribution to coastal zone environmental
management.
