Abstract
O Projeto Baixio de Irecê fica na região do Médio São Francisco, no Estado da Bahia, estando compreendida entre os paralelos 10°25'S e 11°00'S e meridianos 41°50' e 42°30' WGr. Abrange 385 mil hectares, nos vales dos rios Verde e Jacaré, em sua porção inferior. Cerca de 2/3 da área se localiza no município de Xique-Xique e o terço restante no município de Sento Sé. Seus limites são: ao norte o reservatório de Sobradinho, a leste o rio Jacaré, a oeste a Serra do Rumo e ao sul se estende até a cota de 450 m.
Estudos preliminares indicaram a possibilidade do aproveitamento de uma área adicional, localizada entre as cotas de 450m e 480m, cuja superfície irrigável é estimada em 50 mil hectares.
Trata-se, portanto, do maior projeto de irrigação na América-Latina, somente suplantado, em todo o continente, pelo Projeto da Bacia do Columbia, nos desertos do extremo noroeste dos Estados Unidos e cuja área irrigada é de 443.100 hectares.
