The current corpus-driven study draws on Variationist Sociolinguistics to present the Language of Tabatinga, a linguistic reality present in the City of Bom Despacho, state of Minas Gerais, in Brazil. The origin of this language traces back to the slavery past of Brazil, which took to the most diverse places of the nation the barbarity of white men against black people and resulted in a truly ‘mixed’ language, formed from African linguistic-cultural contributions of Bantu origin and varieties of Brazilian Portuguese spoken in the Minas Gerais countryside. This study starts from a description of the historical process of this language formation, identifies its presence in the linguistic manifestations of the society in Bom Despacho, and describes the process of lexical and morphosyntactic formation as well as semantic-pragmatic coverage of the Language of Tabatinga, with subsidies from Corpus Linguistics.
