Climate change and rapid urbanization are altering urban ecosystems, intensifying phenomena such as Urban Heat Islands (UHI) and exacerbating challenges related to air quality, water availability, and public health. The replacement of natural surfaces with built infrastructure alters local climates dynamics, while global warming amplifies extreme events, increasing urban vulnerability. In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which proposes to make cities inclusive, resilient, and sustainable, understanding urban microclimates is crucial for effective adaptation strategies. However, reliable meteorological data remain scarce in many developing countries due to limited monitoring networks, high costs, and infrastructure constraints. In response, this study developed and validated a low-cost meteorological shelter using accessible materials, in accordance with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) guidelines. Field tests conducted under real conditions confirmed their reliability in measuring near-surface air temperature. Its affordability and ease of replication make it a viable tool for institutions with limited resources, supporting the democratization of climate data. Beyond UHI research, the proposed solution has potential applications in agroclimatic assessments, hydrometeorological modeling, and environmental forecasting, with demonstrated suitability for tropical climates.
