Abstract

This article has the objective at analyzing the pedagogical teaching potential of the simulation game Cities Skylines for the teaching of city in Geography, focusing on sustainable urban planning. This work does not exhaust the various possibilities of its use in the teaching and learning process but elucidates potentialities and certain problem situations in the game early stages, which might be compared to a real city, accompanied by the insertion of geographical knowledge throughout the process. Thereunto, theoretical foundations related to sustainable city teaching in Geography were used, as well as the insertion of digital games in the teaching process and learning based on digital games, especially in research regarding the use of the Cities Skylines city simulator. This article outlines a didactic proposal with the game initial stages, which may be used by Geography teachers for sustainable city teaching. It was found that digital simulation game comes to add, with its dynamicity and interactivity, to the process of teaching and learning, having the teacher’s mediation a fundamental role by conducting and guiding of development of geographical thinking process.

Solange, Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the State University of the Midwest UNICENTRO (2005), a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the Federal University of Santa Catarina UFSC (2008) and a master’s degree in Geography from the Federal University of Santa Catarina UFSC (2008). He has experience in Environmental Analysis, City Teaching and Geographic Education. He is currently Professor at the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFC), Campus Videira-SC. PhD student of the Graduate Program in Geography from the State University of the Midwest, UNICENTRO and member of the research and extension group of Geographic Education and Cartography for Schoolchildren - EDUCARTGEO (Department of Unicentro Geography), member of REDLADGEO, Latin American Network of Researchers in Didactics of Geography (young researchers).

Marquiana de Freitas Vilas Boas Gomes, Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste

Marquiana de F. Vilas Boas Gomes is a professor (Associate) at the Department of Geography of the State University of the Midwest (UNICENTRO), Guarapuava-PR. He is an effective member of the graduate program in Geography (UNICENTRO), master’s and doctorate level. Graduated in Geography (Degree and Bachelor) from the State University of Londrina (1997; 1998); Holds a master’s degree (2002) and doctorate (2009) in Geography, Line - Dynamics and Environmental Management from the State University of São Paulo, postdoctoral (2019) in Geography Teaching, in the Teaching-Learning of Geography line of the Federal University of Goiás with post-doctoral internship at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon. She was a tutor for the PET-Geography Group from 2006 to 2009. She served as Unicentro’s Director of Culture in 2009. She was Pro-Rector of Extension and Culture at UNICENTRO from 2010-2016. He is leader of the research group EducartGEO - Geographic Education and Cartography for Schoolchildren. She was a supervisor in the PIBID Geography and Interdisciplinary Teaching Initiation Program at UNICENTRO from 2012 to 2017. Works as a journal reviewer in the area of Geography and Extension. Develops various teaching, research and extension activities in the areas of geography teaching, school cartography and training of geography teachers.
