This study aims at assessing the squares of the city of Ituiutaba (MG). The criteria for the evaluation were taken from the functions of an urban green area, considering environmental, social and aesthetic elements. Methodologically, the study was delimited from bibliographic search containing the terms “public space”, “squares”, “free spaces” and “green areas”. Field activities were also carried out for the apprehension of the performance of the functions, so the observation was mediated by the use of a form adapted from De Angelis, Castro & De Angelis Neto (2004) and from Souza & Amorim (2019). There was also spatialization of the data obtained and demonstration of the quali-quantitative assessment, with respective developments. It was possible to verify that the environmental function is better spreaded in the squares throughout the city; on the other hand, qualitatively, the social and aesthetic functions are concentrated in the central squares or nearby the city center.
