Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the concept of territory in its application as a category of analysis of colonial spaces’ formation in Portuguese America, more precisely in the Northern Captaincies of the State of Brazil. The analysis will be carried out, above all, from the discussion of the theoretical contribution presented by professor Dr. Stuart Elden, in the article “Land, Terrain, Territory” (2010), originally published in the scientific journal of Progress in Human Geography, with translation into Portuguese by professor Márcio José Mendonça, published by Geografares magazine, in 2016.
