Abstract

The article aimed to analyse the impacts of the 2012-2017 multi-year drought on cashew cultivation in Severiano Melo, Rio Grande do Norte, based on remote sensing and the environmental perception of farmers. Therefore, the hydrological aspects related to rainfall were studied. Subsequently, spatial analyses were carried out through field research and the use of the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) through images from Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 satellites. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to 19 farmers. Occurrence of changes in the soil cover was verified due to reduction in vegetation vigor; and reduced surface water availability. The cashew crop recorded losses in the planted area, resulting from water stress, incidence of pests, and agricultural diseases. It is inferred that the mortality of cashew trees may have contributed to the reduction of SAVI values and difficulties in recovering plant vigor after the end of the drought. Therefore, the production of Brazil nuts was severely affected by the lack of rainfall, which impacted on farmers' income. Seeking to restructure cashew farming in the region, replanting of the orchards began in 2014 amid the adversities of water scarcity and the absence of specialized support.
