Degradation of water sources can lead to water-related diseases, with a reduction in the quality of life and health of human populations. The water scarcity in the county of Caruaru-PE is due in part to its climatic characteristics and to the degradation of water resources, which affects limited water sources, aggravating access to this resource in the region. Inadequate amount and quality of water favor the development of diseases such as diarrhea and hepatitis. In this sense, the research evaluated the occurrence of water-related diseases and the relation with surface water degradation. The research involved bibliographic review, primary and secondary data collection, field observation and mapping. The results pointed to the existence of silted rivers, protected areas without riparian forest and with buildings, erosion, solid waste, fetid waters, with coloration and drainage channels directed to the rivers. These aspects collaborate and amplify the occurrence of diseases, such as dengue, chikungunya and diarrhea, which had a higher incidence in the Salgado neighborhood. It can be considered that the degradation of the water sources in Caruaru is related to the use and occupation of land and basic sanitation inadequate, processes inherent to the disordered urban growth.
