VIDAS APARTADAS: OS FILHOS INDENES DOS LÁZAROS INTERNOS NO EDUCANDÁRIO ALZIRA BLEY (1937-1979) – ITANHENGA/ES

Abstract

The subject presented in this paper is part of the results of the dissertation in Geography of the Federal University of Espírito Santo, in the search line Urban and Regional Studies, defended in 2013. It exposes a historic of compulsory isolation period of leprosy patients in the State of Espírito Santo and its consequences for the healthy children who were also segregated from society in Educandários, a practice ruled by laws that denied the coexistence of children who not carriers of leprosy with their parents. The Educandário Alzira Bley, located along the BR 101, Km 9 (Cariacica-ES) is the only one of these spaces in Espírito Santo that accepted all children and adolescents who could not live with their parents in the Hospital Colony Pedro Fontes, in the period between 1937 to 1979. These children spent part of their lives isolated from their parents and society. After studies in Educandário, we presented the main characteristics of the population of 1,547 inmates, about this period, as well as specific characteristics of life in the institution.
