Changes in land use and land cover can directly and indirectly affect ecosystem services and biodiversity. This study examined the spatial and temporal changes in land use in the Serra do Ouro Environmental Protection Area (EPA), which is located in the municipality of Iguaí in the state of Bahia, from 2005 to 2022. The remaining vegetation of the EPA was mapped by altimetric level to verify the relationship between land use and hypsometry. Land use data were extracted from the MapBiomas project, which provides annual land use and land cover data for Brazil. The free software QGIS, version 3.28.11, was used to process the data and generate the maps. The results showed that pasture was the predominant land use in the EPA, though it decreased by 14.78% between 2005 and 2022. The area of forest formation decreased by 3.26%. The highest percentage of vegetation in the EPA is found at an altitude between 800 and 1,000 meters (35.27%). The research revealed that the forest area in the EPA continues to shrink and that agriculture remains the predominant land use.
