This paper analyzes the forms of land appropriation and ways of life in the locality of Pântano do Sul, in Florianópolis (SC), from the 1930s to the early decades of the 21st century. As part of the geographic space, the locality has undergone significant transformations in its modes of production and reproduction of material resources and lifestyles, resulting in a succession of spatial arrangements involving systems of objects and actions. These local transformations reflect broader dynamics occurring at national and global scales. The traditional way of life—centered on artisanal fishing and small-scale farming for subsistence—has gradually given way to land subdivision and residential development. The area is currently under increasing pressure from urban and tourism-related projects, particularly in coastal plain zones with wetlands. Nonetheless, various local communities have mobilized to advocate for the area's designation as a conservation unit. It is evident that while Pântano do Sul underwent gradual changes for much of the 20th century, the 21st century has brought rapid and intense spatial transformations, although certain traditional practices, such as artisanal fishing, still persist.
