The intensification of anthropogenic dynamics has an impact on environmental resources and requires the use of geoprocessing tools to capture the extent and periodicity of territorial changes and help monitoring changes.
This study monitored biophysical changes in three Intermediate Regions in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, over the period from 1985 to 2022 using Mann-Kendall trend statistics. Parameters such as the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI) and precipitation data were analysed. The results showed different trends in the three regions. In the Intermediate Region of Serra Talhada and Petrolina, an increase in NDVI was observed, suggesting a possible increase in plant biomass, although the estimated percentage of vegetation decreased. In the Intermediate Region of Caruaru, the NDVI also increased, indicating a densification of vegetation, while the NDWI showed a downward trend, possibly due to changes in land use. In the Intermediate Region of Recife, there was an increase in NDVI, suggesting an expansion of vegetation, but the NDWI pointed to a downward trend in water body areas, probably related to urban and industrial development. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring biophysical parameters to understand changes in regional landscapes.
