Multi-Literacies and Artificial Intelligence: implications for education
Main Article Content
Abstract
The significant advances in Artificial Intelligence in recent years have had an impact on different spheres of society, including education. Some students and teachers have been using AI in their daily lives, and this has fueled debates that aim to point out paths and, at the same time, challenges for teachers, students, and educational institutions. Thus, this article aims to reflect and debate the implications of the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching, from the perspective of Multiliteracies. To this end, we resort to some discussions about the use of Artificial Intelligence such as ChatGPT, for example, in Portuguese language classes, what impacts the use of AI has on teaching and learning, and how can teachers use literacies so that students, whether “digital natives” or not, can move from being comfortable with digital skills to being digitally experienced? We are guided by studies on Literacies from a more contemporary perspective, which encompasses digital media, as well as how to use them in a more conscious and critical way: Freire (1987, 1996), Jenkins (2008), Pereira (2008, 2009, 2022), Dudeney, Hockly and Pegrum (2016), Zacharias (2016), Rojo (2009, 2012, 2019), Sayad (2022) among others. This is a theoretical discussion, with a qualitative and bibliographical basis, which will critically and dialogically focus on two aspects: multiliteracies and AI.
