Abstract

The objective of this work is to describe the words composed by two nouns, observing the way they are classified in traditional grammars, as well as other ways to classify them, according to Sandmann (1997) and Alves (2004). In addition, we sought to classify the compound words according to the meaning of their two elements, since they are classified only according to the constitution of their grammatical classes in traditional grammars, without giving explanations about their meaning. Only words composed of two nouns, available from the journalistic press, were extracted, analyzed, classified, defined and grouped, available at the Neologisms Base, constituted by the TermNeo Project (available at www.fflch.usp.br/dlcv/neo/). The work concluded that the compound words can be classified according to different concepts from those that appear in the grammars, proposing new ways to observe this phenomenon.
