FOCUS AND SCOPE

Revista Brasileira de Cartografia (RBC) – Brazilian Journal of Cartography – is an open-access journal published regularly since 1970, with national and international coverage. Its mission is to disseminate advances in Cartography & GIS, Cadastre, Geodesy, Hydrography, Photogrammetry, and Remote Sensing. These fields make up the scope of content published in the journal.

The journal's target audience includes researchers, higher education faculty, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and professionals from public and private companies involved in activities in the above-mentioned fields of knowledge.

RBC accepts manuscript submissions in Portuguese and in English in the following sections: Original Articles and Review Articles.

eISSN: 1808-0936 pISSN: 0560-4613 | DOI: https://doi.org/10.14393/revbrascartogr

A profile of the journal, following COPE's model, is available.

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

Manuscripts submitted to RBC will be subject to double-blind peer review. Submissions undergo editorial screening before peer review. Editors may discard manuscripts that do not meet the journal's minimum requirements. The criteria cover the following aspects:

  • overall content quality;
  • language usage;
  • plagiarism;
  • formatting;
  • author identification (name, email, institution, ORCID)
  • works involving human subjects should present the approval of an Ethics Committee (at the institutional, regional, or national level), following resolutions 466/2012 and 510/2016 of the National Health Council of Brazil;
  • Submissions with a single author must be accompanied by a letter justifying this condition.
  • the submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter (download)
  • an author/co-author may have only 2 manuscripts under review at the RBC simultaneously.

After checking these first conditions, the process follows the content evaluation made by the editors. The criteria applied to this assessment are listed below:

  • the contribution must be in the method and/or theory of the field of knowledge to which the manuscript is applied;
  • case studies that do not present contributions to the method or theory will not be prioritized and will tend to be rejected outright;
  • submitted manuscripts will be ranked.
  • we estimate that approximately 40% of the manuscripts sent to RBC meet all the stipulated criteria and can be absorbed by the annual evaluation process;
  • manuscripts from reviewers indebted to RBC will have a delay within the evaluation and may be summarily rejected.

An editor will notify the authors of the decision, providing appropriate justification according to the criteria above.

Articles that pass editorial screening will be forwarded to two referees appointed by a designated editor. In the case of contradictory reviews, a third reviewer will be invited for a redundancy check. The editor will make the decision according to the following categories:

  • accepted: manuscript will be published in due course;
  • revisions required: authors will be asked to make modifications requested by reviewers, in which case there is no guarantee of publication of the manuscript;
  • rejected: the submission will be archived in the system after the handling editor notifies the authors of the decision.

The review process is expected not to exceed four months. Reviewers have 30 days to present their evaluation. Authors have 15 days to present the required corrections; manuscripts presented after that period may be archived. Authors are required to submit a response letter to reviewers' comments. Revised manuscripts are returned to reviewers so that they can verify whether the content is suitable for publication; the deadline for reviewers in this second round is 15 days. Editors will be attentive to the progress of the peer review process so that deadlines are honored. The handling editor may reject the manuscript at any part of the process, provided due justification is presented.

HISTORY

The Brazilian Journal of Cartography (RBC) is an official publication of the Brazilian Society for Cartography, Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (SBC). RBC has established itself as a well-recognized reference in publishing original articles in several areas of knowledge.

RBC was created at the beginning of the 1970s, making it one of the oldest venues in Brazil for disseminating research in Cartography and GIS, Cadastre, Geodesy, Hydrography, Photogrammetry, and Remote Sensing.

RBC's collaborators—editors, reviewers, and authors—are important players in several areas of knowledge. They have contributed to the growth of science and technology in Brazil and abroad by disseminating their research, reviewing works, and assuring the reputation of the peer review process. RBC also has the participation of authors and reviewers from institutions in other countries, which improves the journal's academic relevance.

The journal is well recognized in evaluating postgraduate programs in Brazil, as carried out by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES).

RBC has been published in partnership with renowned public universities in Brazil. Currently, the task is led by the Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU), after a period maintained by the University of Brasilia (UNB) and, previously, by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the São Paulo State University (UNESP).
