Abstract
A UNIDADE DE CARTOGRAFIA foi criada em novembro de 1971 — artigo 13 da Resolução n° 1074 da 41ª Seção do Conselho Administrativo, com a finalidade de dotar o DNER de mapas rodoviários contendo as redes Federal e Estadual e tem procurado, no decorrer do tempo, desenvolver e aprimorar o padrão técnico destes mapas.
Assim é que foram instituídos: o Plano Cartográfico Preliminar e o Plano Cartográfico Rodoviário. O primeiro atenderia curto prazo a demanda do DNER e substituiria os ultrapassados mapas heliográficos, e o segundo substituiria gradativamente o primeiro.
Além dos projetos cartográficos, foram desenvolvidos pelos Engenheiros deste Grupo as metodologias para a execução dos referidos projetos, trabalho que se constitui no fator principal para se alcançar em alto nível, os objetivos da Engenharia Cartográfica.
