Family farming, climate crisis, and the role of popular environmental education in this context

The struggle of family farmers for a more dignified life, to preserve the history of their ancestors and to promote sustainable rural development amid the climate crisis, has become increasingly arduous. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present the challenges and pedagogical practices aimed at ensuring food security and improving the quality of life within family farmers, as well as to discuss the role of popular environmental education in this context. This is a descriptive and qualitative research study, with analyses based on narrative inquiry and non-participant observation. Based on farmers’ accounts, the main challenges faced in context of the climate crisis were identified, and pedagogical practices grounded in popular education were proposed. Popular environmental education, inspired by Freirean pedagogy, serves as an instrument to promote autonomy, socioecological resilience, and sustainable rural development by fostering a dialogical, emancipatory approach centered on the lived experiences of the subjects. In this way, it contributes to the development of critical awareness regarding the climate crisis, the reduction of environmental impacts, and the strengthening of belonging and identity, promoting new, more sustainable and inclusive conceptions of family farming.
