Abstract

The Natural Law Argument in Leo Strauss's Political Theory

Abstract: This article aims to reconstruct Leo Strauss' claims about natural law. Even understanding the complexities of the political theory of this German Jew living in the United States concerning the philosophical sources (Plato, Thucydides, Maimonides) of his reflections, the authors (Nietzsche, Heidegger, Schmitt) who guided his formation and the historical context (Republic of Weimar and United States) in which he lived, I consider that the substantive-immanent core, as well as the political implications that derive from it in modernity, of Straussian conceptions are in the way in which the (imposed) legitimacy of the natural law is defended.
