Abstract

This essay aims to bring the concept of “musicking”, by Christopher Small (1998), a musician and scholar informed by Geertz's interpretive anthropology (1973) and Bateson's theory of mind (1972). “Musicking” can be understood, in its dimensions of function and nature, as constituiting of the human being, considering its biological, social and cultural foundations. From this exhibition, we bring some implications of this concept for Music Education, considering the contribution of Finnish authors (ODENDAAL et al., 2014) who identify it and express it as a sonic-social phenomenon and provoke the area with some questions: can we do general education without “musicking”? How can we organize our musical educational environments?
