This article discusses the nature of Portuguese spelling manuals, their establishment as an expression of linguistic policy, and their relevance to the history of Portuguese. The discussion shows that these manuals arise from a social demand, that of a language elevated to the status of a national language; they emerge with a communicative purpose guided essentially by deonticity, to guide the speaker's linguistic and orthographic conduct; and they emerge through the process of imitation, adopting values and explanatory models from the classical grammatical tradition. The use of imitatio, however, does not preclude the emergence of authentic material without a direct Latin counterpart.
