Rendering Fingerspelling in Simultaneous Interpreting from Libras into Portuguese

This paper discusses fingerspelling in Libras–Portuguese simultaneous interpreting and its implications for interpreter performance. We review work on sequential production, coarticulation, and rate, and analyze two datasets, Gomes (2020) on proper names in academic conferences and Viana (2022) on themed videos containing fingerspelling. Findings show a tendency to preserve or compress the input under risk, increased omissions as rate rises, pauses after the word and vowel lengthening within the item, while contextual support and lexicalization reduce processing cost. We outline practice-oriented measures that emphasize prosodic time management, lexical preparation, and targeted training focused on chunked reception, morphosyntactic integration, and calibrated use of disfluencies. We conclude that managing fingerspelling—rather than merely recognizing it—is crucial to preserving fluency and adequacy in Portuguese in voice interpreting tasks.
