The (devious) ways of socio-territorial conflicts in eastern Amazon

This essay is part of the researching project funded by CNPq “Socio-Territorial Impacts of the Large Enterprises in the Brazilian Easter Amazon”. It aims to discuss the territorial impacts of the large mining enterprises after 2015, and their interference in increasing conflicts within areas under their direct and indirect influence. In order to, we used data from the National Mining Agency (ANM), IPEA, SNPM, IBRAM, IBGE, Justice on Tracks, MAM, official data from town halls and from other governmental federal institutions, was well as data from field trips, done for the recognition of the area of study in the municipalities of Parauapebas and Canaã dos Carajás (state of Pará) and Açailândia (state of Maranhão) in 2021. The analyses of the socio-spatial impacts and the socio-economic conflicts of mining business in the Eastern Amazon was done through cartographic representation. We analyzed the land conflicts caused directly and indirectly by the large enterprises, and the economic dynamics in the integration of such mining-holding territories to the international economy and their role in developing the Brazilian Eastern Amazon, based on the regional logistics of transportation of products in Carajás Railroad (EFC) and Railroad 151, in the borders of the states of Pará and Maranhão, which have proceeded even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
