Abstract

In the Brazilian semi-arid region, historic deforestation creates large, degraded areas, including in Conservation Units (CUs). The objective of this work was to identify, analyze and compare the areas where the highest and lowest levels of Surface Soil Moisture Index (SSMI) are concentrated, in degraded areas with vegetation cover in two CUs located in Cariris Velhos/PB. A set of points obtained through fieldwork and satellite images were used, with SSMI levels being measured by obtaining and combining data on Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), during the rainy and dry periods. The results showed that in both CUs, the points referring to degraded areas presented low SSMI; high LST and low NDVI, while preserved areas had high levels of SSMI and NDVI, in addition to high biomass values.
