Abstract

In the state of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil, the Cerrado is often represented by small remnants. Understanding the factors that interfere with the dynamics of these remnants is essential for their conservation and management. This study presents a floristic and phytosociological survey carried out in Corumbataí, São Paulo, in a 38.8 ha fragment protected from fire for 43 years. All woody trees ≥ 1.5 m (diameter ≥ 0.32 cm) were sampled. The prolonged fire suppression favored the occupation of the fragment by species sensitive to fire, such as Amaioua guianensis Aubl. (Rubiaceae) and Daphnopsis fasciculata (Meisn.) Nevling. (Thymelaeaceae), to the detriment of savanna species. Comparisons of our results with previous studies conducted in the same location contributed to the understanding of the impact caused by the period of absence of fires.
