Abstract

The objective of this research was to map and identify archaeological remains, through the use of geoindicators, in the landscape that encompasses the Serra da Mesa area, municipality of Gurinhatã, MG. To this end, knowledge from Geographic Science was used, mainly with an emphasis on geological, geomorphological, and hydrographic dynamics. The methodological procedures were: a) Bibliographic review and creation of thematic mappings, b) Fieldwork and photographic recording of the landscape, in which artifacts found on the surface were highlighted. The results obtained characterized the Serra da Mesa as a tabular relief, and with a lithostructure characterized by the Marília Formation, with the Cerrado being the main predominant vegetation. Several places where chipped lithic artifacts produced by indigenous groups were recorded on the hilltops. The in situ observation of chipped lithic archaeological materials, correlated with the physical aspects that make up the geographic landscape, contributed to studies of the settlement pattern of human groups that inhabited the region in the past.
