BESIDES THE LOOK: GEOPHOTOGRAPHED LANDSCAPES OF ILHÉUS, IN THE SOUTH OF BAHIA

Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine landscapes of Ilhéus, in the south of Bahia, from a geophotographic perspective as objective realities, considering their meaning and how they are loaded with meaning for its inhabitants. It is a qualitative research that has phenomenology as a methodological path, as well as this perspective for the analysis of a geographic-humanist nature of the geophotographed landscapes. As for the methodological procedures, we sought a theoretical-conceptual foundation, selected significant ilheenses landscapes based on our experience in the place and analyzed them according to the chosen methodological orientation. Like this, four landscapes were analyzed: Morro do Outeiro de São Sebastião: considered the starting point of the colonial village of São Jorge dos Ilhéus, therefore, very important in the history of the portuguese occupation of the place. Cocoa: represents the economic growth of Ilhéus, as well as its social, cultural and political life, but, above all, the way of life of its inhabitants. The Cathedral of São Sebastião: symbolized the richness of the place in the past and the great Catholic faith of the people of Ilheenses until today. The writer Jorge Amado: spread worldwide the unique culture of the regional cocoa landscape, writing his novels with a plot guided by cocoa and inspired by the inhabitants, places, things, events, in short, by the urban-regional cocoa culture.
