The present article analyzes the reliability of land use data for rural properties declared in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR). The registry was set up to obtain a single database of environmental and economic information on rural areas in Brazil. It is an instrument for environmental regularization, which allows producers to access agricultural credit and enables public bodies to conduct economic and environmental planning of the territory. It is essential that the information provided is as close to reality as possible, and the municipality of Mariana, in Minas Gerais, was chosen for this verification. The municipality was chosen because of its historical and economic importance. The base registered in the CAR was used to check the level of reliability of the registered data on land use and land cover, and two accuracy comparisons were made, one using the Google Earth image and the other using data from MapBiomas - collection 5. It was decided not to check the APP delimitations due to the complexity of obtaining reliable data for the analysis. The results showed that the data entered was of good quality, with a Kappa index of 0.75 and 0.69, respectively.
