Studies involving Cartography and the viralization of content on social media - called Viral Cartography - are recent and present many questions, one of them being meme maps. In this context, an Instagram and Twitter page called @cartografiaviral was created to investigate this issue. The objectives of this research are (i) to present five subjects that went viral with memes that use maps or cartographic knowledge between 2020-2022 and (ii) to debate data from a meme map contest produced by @cartografiaviral. The research is qualitative and used search data and statistics from Twitter and Instagram. Evaluating the memes, it is observed that cartographic concepts are necessary for their creation and interpretation, such as: scale/proportion, laterality, location, types of vision, distance and concepts of Thematic Cartography. However, it is noteworthy that purposeful manipulations or mistakes in memes make cartographic communication difficult and are likely to generate fake news. As for the meme contest, the possibility of reaching different audiences stands out as a third of the accounts reached on Instagram were not followers of @cartografiaviral. We agree that the meme-map does not have scientific rigor, but we argue that the possibilities of this language in relation to Cartography and Geography Teaching are vast in the academic field.
