Public and private green spaces in cities are important for the health of the population and for urban environmental quality. Private green spaces are not always taken into account by urban planning sectors, but they should be included in projects. This article organizes and discusses data about vegetation in gardens and backyards within private lots and public green spaces, with the aim of discussing the relation between both. The studies were carried out in seven cities in the state of Paraná: Quarto Centenário, Fênix, Juranda, Cianorte, Peabiru, Ângulo and Campo Mourão. The surveys were carried out based on satellite images and the quantification was carried out using the QGIS software. The results pointed to a diversity of situations. There are cases in which the lack of public green spaces is being compensated by backyards and private gardens of the lots or vice versa, and there are others in which public and private green spaces are not enough to provide citizens with possibilities for recreation, among other activities in contact with nature. The increase in vegetation on private lots should be encouraged by public authorities and studies about urban green should be increasingly improved to improve life in cities.
