In this paper, the objective is to discuss the evolution of Urban Climate studies both in concepts and application for the city of Recife, capital of the state of Pernambuco (Brazil) and, thus, collaborate with the understanding of the history of these studies and with theoretical and methodological perspectives for future research. The discussions raised presented the themes of urban climate involving the city of Recife until today, pointing out their main authors. Therefore, the challenges outlined for future studies include developing means for applicability in urban planning; understanding the urban effect on pluviometric precipitation; refining the urban effect observations; overcoming the lack of observation points; and developing integrative approaches to urban climate and climate change. Since such challenges are also true in other cities, especially in developing countries, this article is an invitation to those who intend to research this theme, having as locus of investigation not only Recife, but also other Brazilian cities that share similar historical processes of urban expansion, thus, avoiding systematic ignorance of the history of climate studies.
