Research on the application of mathematical models in watersheds (WS) with karst relief is scarce in Brazil. SWAT is one of the most used hydrological models internationally; it can simulate different hydrological processes at different scales through long time series. The application of these models makes it possible to analyze and understand the functioning of the components of an aquifer, but the simulation of physical and hydrological processes varies greatly as to the employability of the methods and techniques used to carry out these studies. Therefore, this article aims to highlight the main applications of SWAT for basins located in a karst relief system. The research methodology covered three stages of the Systematic Literature Review (SLR): a) planning; b) selection technique; and c) evaluation. We selected 19 international studies with SLR. However, four national studies stood out; of these, three were conducted in basins of the Cerrado biome. Based on this investigation, we identified gaps in research involving the theme, as well as strategies for detecting the sensitivity of parameters and variables, losses and benefits related to the generation of runoff in a basin that is difficult to cover by traditional methods.
