The purpose of this paper was to analyze the spatial distribution of vegetation and greenspaces in the city of Fortaleza, State of Ceará, and its relationship with socio-environmental aspects. The methodological procedures were divided into the stages of bibliographic and documental research, geo-cartographic and remote sensing material survey and data analysis. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using QGIS 3.4.8 software was applied to identify the areas with vegetation cover. Scales and categories of spatial distribution of vegetation were defined for data analysis, the Vegetation Cover Ratio (VCR) for the districts was calculated and, from there, association analyses between the VCR and HDI were performed. The Ratio of Greenspace per Inhabitant was also calculated. In the city of Fortaleza, 25.15% of the territory is covered by vegetation (78,843,065.03sqm), with 36.46% representing dense vegetation and 63.54% corresponding to less dense vegetation. Only 10 districts in the city of Fortaleza concentrate 50.19% of the vegetal cover. Most of it is in the eastern region of the city, whose urban expansion consolidation is still in progress and holds some important Conservation Units (CUs). The CUs and the System of Greenspaces of the city contribute to safeguard part of the vegetation.
