Abstract

Located in the Northwest region of the state of São Paulo, São José do Rio Preto has been undergoing a rapid urban expansion that followed two distinct ways: the expansion by the illegal production of habitations, between the 1980s and 1990s; and the expansion by legal production, between the decade of 2000 and 2010. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze these two ways, which not only make the urban area more dispersed, but also result in a worsening of segregation in the city. For this, we carried out fieldwork and research to collect data about the history of the processes, and conducted an interview with the city’s Housing Secretary, where we get better information about the current situation.
