Abstract

Since 2004, the Brazilian State has subsidized oil palm production for both companies and family farmers in Pará state, with the aim of incentivizing biodiesel production and the social inclusion of these farmers. Today, however, the companies' contribution to the biodiesel market is minimal, which goes against the initial purpose of the overall project. As for farmers, research differs on the benefits they have acquired by adopting this production system. This article seeks to analyze the integration between the two parties according to their interests and the changes in farmers' production conditions. Research was carried out by means of a case study and included open interviews based on a pre-determined script and semi-structured questionnaires. Data was also analyzed using the Student’s T test and through descriptive statistics; results were further supported by secondary data and a literature review. Research results demonstrate that the motives for integration for both parties are directly connected, which does not imply a harmonious relationship, nor a passive subordination on the part of family farmers. Farmers weigh the negative and positive points in the contractual relationship, allowing us to understand why they opt for integration and their perceptions of the changes they have experienced.
