Abstract

The study presents the result of a research performed in a public school with students from the ninth grade of elementary school. The research fetched to know everyday spatial practices through the elaboration of mental maps. The spatial categories place and territory made it possible to understand aspects of the daily life of the community and to indicate the potential of geographic education for teaching and school management. The students manifested absences, such as the lack of pavements, recreation areas and health services, as well as desires and problems associated with global youth, such as conviviality with situations of use and trade of drugs and the precarious access to the internet. They want to remain in the community, the result of both a process of naturalization of precariousness and, also, of an identity with the place.
