Abstract

This study looks at the trajectory of three sporting associations of Ilha do Governador/Rio de Janeiro – Jequiá Futebol Clube/Esporte Clube, Iate Clube Jardim Guanabara and Jockey Club Guanabara –, chosen by their experiences in order to discuss the structuring of the island before its greater growth time. The time frame ranges from 1919 (date of creation of the first association) to 1962 (year of extinction of the last). To reach the objective, magazines and newspapers published in the city were used as sources. Developed on the border between the Geography of Sport and the History of Sport, it is expected to realize how these initiatives acted in the production of space, dialogued and were agents in the configuration of a profile, a vocation, a set of representations about Ilha do Governador. It is concluded that the investigated clubs actively participated in the constitution of the territory, well expressing the societal changes that the researched region went through.
