Abstract

Public use can be considered one of the fundamental pillars to conciliate enviromental conservation with human activities, given that the relationship between society and nature, in general, has represented one of the greatest and oldest challanges of human societies. This research, one of the fruits of Doctoral thesis, aims to present possible paths for the consolidation of public use in Protection Areas, and had as spatial focus on Nova Iguaçu Municipal Natural Park (RJ). The methodology is based on analysis of actions developed and/or implemented in course of the research, where we tried to analyse teaching, research and extension activities. The research revealed, among other aspects, the importance of partnership, mainly from University and its founding tripod, so that Protection Areas continue to exist and fulfill their social and environmental role. It is expected to contribute with reflections for Parks with similar characteristics are able, in view of their conditions, to effect public use, so essential for their role in society. It should be emphasized that paths can lead to this consolidation require efforts from public authorities and civil society.
