Abstract

This article analyses the construction of the so called "caboclo landscape" in a frontier space of the region covered by the Mixed Ombrophilous Forest in Santa Catarina, and its common land use practices. The article starts with the occupation of the region, in the last quarter of 19th. Century until the second half of the 20th century, when the advance of a new socio-spatial logics, represented by the private land appropriation through logging and colonization promoted the landscape change, and the disruption of traditional land use practices and access. To understand this process of transformations in the landscape of the past, it works with the scope of historical geography, taking for standpoint the idea of the inseparability of space and time, using various research sources such as images, censuses, oral testimonies and newspaper reports from the period.
