IDENTIFICATION AND MAPPING OF ECOSYSTEM PROVISION SERVICES IN THE MANGUEZAL OF RIO TIJUPÁ, MARANHÃO ISLAND (NORTHEAST REGION OF BRAZIL)

Abstract

Ecosystem services (SE) are tangible and intangible goods used directly or indirectly by society. The aim of this study was to identify the provision services provided by the Tijupá river mangrove and its spatial distribution. As methodological procedures, a preliminary checklist from the bibliographic consultation was used, which was used in interviews with users in the area. Ecosystem services were classified according to the Common International Classification (CICES, 2013), following the CICES classification and mapped based on Burkhard (2017). The provision services identified in the area correspond to: fishing, beekeeping, removal of wood converted into materials (fence, domestic support), use of fauna for fishing, wood converted to energy (coal). The geoenvironmental units (apicum, mangrove forest, lavado and tide channels) presented distinct services, with the mangrove forest and the tidal channels identified as high-capacity sites providing SEs. This information is relevant to integrate the mapping of the services provided by this ecosystem, since data on the distribution, intensity and demand of the services are important to identify the most vulnerable areas to anthropic interventions, assisting in coastal management.
