Abstract

Hydrological-type disasters, such as floods and flash floods, seem to become recurrent due to global climate change and the forms of land use and occupation that alter the supply of environmental services. Ecosystem-based approaches have been considered adaptive strategies to disasters and, from this, the role of ecosystem services (ES) in risk management has been investigated. This survey aimed to identify the potential of ES mappings in collaborating with hydrological disaster risk reduction activities. It was found that from the emphasis on the spatially explicit representation of the supply and demand for ES, the mappings have great potential to contribute to the structuring of an environmental paradigm in the Brazilian risks and disasters management by consolidating a new conceptual approach to the risk.
