Abstract

This article seeks to establish associations between the field of art geography and the history of Brazilian art, in order to present a new historiographical perspective, based on the displacement and circulation of individuals and ideas between culturally distinct territories. Through some concepts developed by art geographers Boris Gresillon, Tomas da Costa Kaufmann and Piotr Piotrowiski and the reflections made by art historian Beatrice Joyeux-Prunel on the artistic avant-garde in Brazil, it becomes possible to think about the construction of an Art History Brazilian, structured essentially from the study of transatlantic cultural transfers, based on the relationship of individuals with the geographical, social, economic and cultural dimensions of space. Based on the discussion of artistic centers and peripheries, the article reveals the importance and the need to study the cultural production of artistic peripheries in Brazil, through the Geography of Art, in order to contribute to the construction of an inclusive Brazilian Art History, global and transnational, capable of revising hegemonic narratives and processes of exclusion.
