Spellings of time: creations for measurement and denunciation beyond walls of a mining company

Abstract

This visual essay is based on the project Grafias do Tempo, initiated in 2021. It stems from artist Vânia Barbosa’s experience around the Capão Xavier mine, located in the Jardim Canadá neighborhood, in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. The ongoing artistic research encompasses various mediums, including drawing, installation, photography, video, and performance, resulting in both solo and group exhibitions. With a critical, sensitive, and site-specific approach, the project invites reflections on the impacts of mining. The creative process and its developments engage with theoretical, and curatorial references underscoring the urgency and relevance of the project’s themes.
