Abstract

This paper aims to follow the production trajectory of the Mappa Chorographico da Provincia de São Paulo (1837),
fi rst map pressed of this province which, up that time, still has the actual Paraná state incorporated to its territory.
Through documents researched mainly in the Arquivo do Estado de São Paulo and Acervo Histórico da Assembleia
Legislativa do Estado de São Paulo, we got to rebuild all the production line of this map, since its ordering (1835),
passing through details of its design (1835-1837) and printing on France (1841), until we fi nish its way when it has its
copies presented to the representatives of the Assembleia Legislativa de São Paulo (1842). From this reconstitution,
more than explicit the original public to who the map was destined, we also got to understand better the reasons which
leads to the creation of the map, the reason why it has to be pressed and why in France, to compare the political context
which leads to the production of this map with the political context of the previous maps and suggest some changes
in the focus of the cartographic production of São Paulo in the period which succeeded the Brazilian independence
compared with the previous period pre-independence.
