Resumo: Este artigo tem como objetivo elucidar o papel da deusa Fortuna e suas atribuições no curso dos acontecimentos narrados na obra de Amiano Marcelino. Primeiramente situaremos o autor num contexto de produção literária do tipo historiográfico na Antiguidade Tardia. Depois buscaremos determinar em que medida historiadores clássicos influenciaram sua escrita, sua narrativa e seu pensamento histórico. Tendo feito isso, analisaremos as mudanças das características e dos domínios da Fortuna até a Antiguidade Tardia e, por fim, ao conjugarmos esses elementos, buscaremos compreender como essa divindade surge em sua obra como força motriz que influenciou em certos acontecimentos marcantes para o Império Romano tardio.

To understand the role of the fortvna in the destiny of the empire in Ammianus Marcellinus
Abstract: This article aims to elucidate the role of the goddess Fortuna and her attributes in the course of
the events described by Ammianus Marcellinus. First, we will situate the author's place on a context of
historiographical production in Late Antiquity. Secondly, we will try to determine to what extent classical
historians influenced his writing, his narrative and his historical thought. Afterwards, we will analyze the
transformation of the qualities and domains of Fortune up to the Late Antiquity and, lastly, by coordinating
such elements, we will attempt to comprehend how this deity emerges in Ammianus' work as a motive power
that influenced in some of the most remarkable events of the Late Roman Empire.
