Sílvio Elia’s contribution to the Historiography of the Portuguese language in Brazil

The article analyzes Sílvio Elia’s contributions to the historiography of the Portuguese language in Brazil, emphasizing his proposal for periodization and the dialectal division of the national territory. Based on a historiographical and qualitative approach, it engages with theorists such as Auroux (2004) and Haugen (1959) to discuss the relationship between language history and political and cultural projects. Elia proposes four periods for Portuguese in Brazil—implantation, stabilization, nationalization, and consolidation/diversification—and identifies eight dialectal areas according to phonetic, morphosyntactic, and sociolinguistic criteria. His typology surpasses previous models through its analytical refinement and attention to transitional zones. By combining philological tradition with historiographical critique, Elia highlights Brazil’s linguistic plurality and denounces the exclusions imposed by the standard norm, reaffirming his relevance to linguistic studies and to the understanding of Brazilian linguistic identity.Downloads
