Abstract

The state of Sergipe, despite being the smallest state in Brazil, accounts for a significant percentage of national shrimp production, and despite that, the spatial and temporal distribution of shrimp farming throughout Sergipe territory has not been studied. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to map shrimp cultivation areas along the coast of Sergipe over time and analyze its spatial distribution in the state. For this, the number of nurseries and their productive area was mapped and analyzed, using data from the Brazilian Association of Shrimp Breeders and organs of the state of Sergipe, and satellite imagery survey. There was a growing increase over time in both the number of nurseries and the shrimp production area, with greater expression in 2016, representing 1507.04 ha, divided in 1951 nurseries in 17 municipalities. It was also verified the occurrence of Subnormal Agglomerates in the metropolitan region of Aracaju. The study enabled the mapping and counting of the number of tanks and estimated the area of production destined to the shrimp farming activity along the Sergipe coast, showing the potential of remote sensing techniques application in the theme.
