Abstract

The rapid growth of the urban population in Brazil has brought significant impacts, generating complex social and environmental problems. Thus, the present work aims to propose new urban areas, in the Federal District, that have sustainable potential, that is, spaces that can be appropriated in order to ensure minimal impacts to the environmental system so as not to compromise the offer of vital ecosystem services. As a method, multicriteria analysis techniques and Weighted Hierarchical Analysis were used, combined with geoprocessing tools. A restriction map was applied to areas intended for environmental preservation and, in addition, some areas, established by legal instruments, were analyzed. Spaces with urban potential were well distributed throughout the DF, especially, to the east of the map. At the same time, it was possible to identify areas with greater need for preservation in terms of ecological maintenance, such as the northwestern region of DF. The designation of urban spaces, using the method presented, is an important process to ensure a low environmental impact, since the choice of criteria, their classification, and their weighting were brought as an integral part to the fundamental ecological systems, which aims to ensure the sustainable functioning of the territory.
