The urge to work with themes related to poverty in its multiple dimensions has grown exponentially. Despite being present throughout the country, poverty affects Brazilian regions unequally. Finding few published studies, and from the observation about the disparities between rural and urban areas, this research emerges, which aimed to analyze poverty from a multidimensional perspective in the Ilhéus-Itabuna Intermediate Region, for the 2010 census year.To this end, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (IPM) was estimated from three dimensions and seven indicators. The results show that rural areas have a higher IPM than urban areas. Regarding the deprivation of the inhabitants, in the rural area the highest percentages are related to sanitation (84.6%), water supply (78.6%) and garbage collection (77.8%). In the urban area, the greatest deprivations are related to income. 76.1% of the inhabitants are unable to acquire assets and 46.6% are deprived of food and medicine. It concludes by the need for policies that foster the growth and development of localities, offering greater access to basic services essential to the rural population, in addition to promoting employment and income for the entire population.Downloads
